An exploration of the military uses of Holyrood Park from 1850 to 1939’. This talk will draws upon the rich the archaeological and documentary record to discuss military activity in the park through the 1800s and 1900s.
Gordon Barclay is an archaeologist and historian, working on the physical and archival remains of the defence of Scotland in the 19th and 20th centuries. He worked for Historic Environment Scotland’s predecessor departments between 1977 and 2009. His recent work has included a reassessment of the evidence for the riot - the ‘Battle of George Square’ - and subsequent military deployment in Glasgow in January 1919.
